ABOUT ORIENT KOI FARM.

Ever since Koi keeping first took a foothold in South Africa in the early 1970's, there have been informal and formal (aquaculture) attempts to breed these appealing pond fish. For the first two decades the results were usually mediocre.

Inexperience in the spawning of parent fish and the rearing of fry resulted in very small harvests. The prohibitive costs of importing quality breeding stock and the lack of know-how in making up breeding groups from available parent fish, resulted in low quality offspring.

The scenario changed dramatically when Orient Koi Farm in the Cullinan District commenced Koi aquaculture in 1992. With its limited but very high quality breeding stock and a carefully planned breeding programme, it succeeded in producing a harvest of Koi of promising quality.

In the following year the quality continued to improve sufficiently for some of the young fish to be selected as Supreme Champions at the National South African Koi Shows.

The Van der Merwe family started the farm in 1989 – it was known as Brian’s Fish Hatchery. The farm bred goldfish and comets.

In 1992 Mr Ronnie Watt (Author of “the Living Jewels”) bought shares in the farm. The farm then started breeding Koi and was renamed Orient Fish Farm.

In 1994 several Japanese Koi Specialists visited the farm.

In 1996 the world renowned book “the Living Jewels” was written by Mr Ronnie Watt and Mr Servaas de Kock. Much of the research was done on Orient Fish Farm. A large number of the Koi used for photography was bred by Orient Fish Farm.

In 1998 Mr Servaas de Kock (Co-author of “the Living Jewels”) bought Orient Fish Farm. Mr Watt however still had a number of shares in the company. By now Orient Fish Farm has established itself as a leading entity in the Koi industry in South Africa winning numerous national awards as well as a second place in the All Japan Koi Show.
